Game pays homage to the 50 years of the LOGO programming language, the first aimed at children, and presents basic programming concepts in a fun way.

 A tradition at Google is Doodles, homages that replace the logo on the company page on holidays. Originally still images, Doodles have evolved into interactive experiments, such as musical instruments or even games. This week, Google used a fun interactive Doodle to commemorate the 50th anniversary of LOGO, the first programming language for children.

 Created in the USA in 1967 by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon, LOGO uses natural language and simple commands to teach children the basics of programming. It is best known for the “turtle”, a cursor (physical or virtual) controlled as commands such as “FRONT 50: RIGHT 90 ″ that can be used to create vector graphics.

In the Doodle called Programming by Carrots, children (and adults too, why not?) Have to help a nice rabbit to collect carrots. To do this, they need to combine blocks with commands (such as "forward", "turn 90º" or "repeat") to tell the rabbit how to walk the path. There are no limits or penalties for errors, it is possible to try until you find the solution. There are altogether six phases, with increasing difficulty.

Even in something apparently so simple, there are important lessons, such as "programs are sequences of commands, executed in order". Children learn to analyze a problem (the way to go), to combine tools (the available commands) and to plan a solution (the final sequence). Doodle, by the way, rewards players with a “medal” that can find the most efficient solution for a level, which adds an extra layer to the problem solving. Pleasant music and cute graphics complete this introduction to children's programming.

Programming through Carrots shows that it doesn't take much to arouse interest in programming. Try it and show it to your kids. Who knows, maybe it’s the beginning of a passion?
